With L2s taking the centre stage in many blockchain conversations in recent times, Optimism continues to push the boundaries of blockchain scalability. Imagine a network of interconnected chains that share security, communication, and development standards, overcoming traditional blockchain limitations by enabling horizontal scalability, making it possible for more chains to be added to this network without compromising performance or security. That’s the future Optimism is building and that future is called Superchain! This future is already in full swing as we have seen major upgrades on the tech level such as Bedrock and the governance level such as law of chains initiated. Additionally, there have been an influx of many chains joining the Superchain ecosystem.

With new projects, ecosystems and chains beginning to join and build using the OP stack and joining the Superchain eco, momentum continues to accelerate.

Key take away for Africans

The Op stack provides great infrastructure for builders to deploy L2s that address various needs and for specific use cases. Beyond infrastructure the Optimism collective provide support for those building on top of the stack and contributing to the ecosystem in general. African builders and developers are welcome to deploy L2s for various use cases. additionally, there’s a call for those looking to directly contribute to building the Superchain(check links section for resources)

Fundraising looking super?

With Kotani Pay and Nestcoin(Onboard wallet) currently in the news for raising $2m and $1.9m pre-seed and strategic funding round respectively, some positive sentiment is being restored in the builder ecosystem in Africa. The Nestcoin raise is a welcome injection as the company was one of the many victims of the FTX collapse leading it to lay off workers. Over the past months, some prominent crypto companies such as Bundle and others have closed shop and had to restrategize as a result of funding crunch. We are happy to see new fundraises for companies leveraging crypto to address challenges on the continent.

You know what else is Super? ETHAccra Hackathon 2023!

ETHAccra was the first of its kind in West Africa. A 3-day in-person Hackathon that brought various stakeholders(developers, mentors, builders, media, curious-folks, web3-folks) together to ideate, learn, hack, and build solutions to address local problems leveraging crypto tech. The event saw over 100 attendees from various parts of Ghana and Nigeria and over 15 project submissions from the Hackathon. For a completely builder-focused event, which was also the first of it kind, having such number of attendees was pretty awesome, and we believe IRL hackathon in West Africa is off to a great start. ETHAccra Hackathon 2023 was made possible due to the great work of the ETHAccra team, Bankless Africa, Defi Africa and Afroblocks.
